So, I'll be the first to admit I'm not a huge college football fan. I watched the BCS National Championship Game off and on and well, I wasn't impressed. What a disappointment. All this buildup for that? A thousand meaningless bowl games all leading up to the formula-chosen National Championship Game. I'm not one of these non-SEC guys crying foul because it's only one conference represented but why isn't there a playoff? I'm not even opposed to using the BCS computers to determine the top teams. I just think the computers should determine the top 8 teams and let the teams determine which two play for the Championship. I've heard all the arguments in favor of the current system and I just don't get it. It all comes down to revenue, right? Here are my thoughts:
Argument 1: It's too many extra games for the kids. Really? 8 team playoff is 3 weeks. For the 2 Championship teams, its an extra 2 games over the current system. For the 2 semi-final teams, its only 1 extra game and that's it. 4 teams play extra games but it creates an extra 6 games for ticket sales, TV revenue, vendors, hotels, restaurants...
Argument 2: The bowl games bring in money for the University. That's fine, keep all those extra meaningless bowl games that bring in money. They can still have all the Fight Hunger Bowls and UCLA fans like myself will still watch their (losing record) teams in these games.
Argument 3: The Rose Bowl (for instance) will never be a Semi-Final. What is it now? Nothing. Oregon beat Wisconsin. Great. I didn't even watch. I, for one, just don't care. Wouldn't it be better if Oregon could advance and play for the National Title??
Argument 4: There's not enough time. LSU and 'Bama had 4 and 5 weeks off respectively. C'mon! Give each team one week off after the conference championship games and then play a 3 week playoff and finish with the National Championship Game on the same weekend as it is now.
Argument 5: The kids have to study. I call BS! The College Hoops Tourney is right in the middle of finals for schools on the quarter system. The kids take their finals in the hotel rooms. Plus, I'm sorry, nobody with this argument really means it.
Personally, the only postseason games I watch are my team and the National Championship. Honestly, I just don't care about the other games. Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I don't think so. If nobody likes the current system, why do you watch it? If you don't watch it and the revenue goes down, they'll change it, right? Let's change it folks. Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell No! Who's with me? Let's Go!!!
